THE DRESDEN FILES: WAR CRY review
(Reviewed by Melody Werner)
It should be known by now that I'm a huge Dresden Files fan. Eleven of the main books are absolutely excellent, with the first two being decent, Cold Days being meh, and Ghost Story being incredibly boring and uninspired, despite having a cool concept. I blitzed through each of the novels in about a day a piece, but hadn't touched any of the comics until today. Today, I will review an original story set in the Dresden Files canon, War Cry. A 2014 5 issue miniseries co-written by series author Jim Butcher; with frequent collaborator on these minis, Mark Powers; illustrated by Carlos Gomez; covers by Stjepan Sejic; published by Dynamite Entertainment.
The concept and plot are nothing special here. It's a group of Wardens holding out against a vampire siege, protecting a few members of the Venatori. The execution, however, is quite good. The dialogue is good, with bits of spice here and there, but not as good as in the novels. The characters are all good and adapted to a tee, where applicable. The same can't be said for the cannon fodder newcomers of the Venatori.
Speaking of, everything here just feels like a heartfelt message to series fans. Plenty of fan service (not of the tits and ass type); moments any fan of the series is probably just happy to see unfold in a visual medium.
The art is rather good, though some faces just look terrifying in places. Everything feels so Dresden that I can't help but love it.
Is War Cry the best thing in the Dresden Files' library? FUCK NO. But is it the worst? FUCK NO. Is it amazing? No, but it is good. And I am a bit disappointed that's all I can say to express how much I enjoyed it. But then again... coulda been Ghost Story. War Cry gets a 7.5/10.
Good
Summary:
A good bit of fun sure to be enjoyed by any fan of the bestselling novel franchise. Good art, dialogue, characters, all mixes to make a respectable entry into the franchise, unlike the show or Ghost Story.
