RED RISING review

(Reviewed by Melody Werner)
Red Rising is a 2014 sci-fi epic novel written by Pierce Brown. The first installment of a trilogy (though a new trilogy in this series is set to begin in January of next year (at time of writing)), it was met with critical acclaim. It follows a mining slave on Mars who, after being betrayed by the elites in society, injects himself into the aristocrat's race in a bid to gain power and begin a rebellion. Now this is a pretty large book (382 pages in the copy I read), but I finished it in about 4 days worth of reading. I think that's a testament to how exceptional this novel is.

The narrative is extremely compelling, spontaneous, and brutal. It's hard to predict future plot points as it shunts many expected story moments. The saddest moments are also absolutely merciless. The prose may seem dense and flowery as you're getting into it, but it helps build this world the story is set in, is well written and vivid, and works extremely well. The characters are intriguing with their own arcs, motivations, secrets, and faults. The dialogue and narration are interesting and fit the characters. The ending is a bit sequel bait, but it's still really satisfying and makes you want to read the next installment immediately.

After finishing Rising Red, I immediately have that buzz where I want to go read Golden Son, the next book in the series. If I were to nitpick, I'd say that the pitch inside the book spoils some plot points and says too much. But that's not really a fault with the book itself per se. All in all, I'll definitely be reading the rest of the books in this series. Red Rising gets a 10/10 from me.

Masterpiece

Summary:
A tense and wild ride which embodies the word "epic", Red Rising is definitely wor th reading.
