THE SIXTH GUN review

(Reviewed by Melody Werner)
“The Second Gun spreads the very fires of Perdition!”
The Sixth Gun is a 2010-2016 series written by Cullen Bunn, illustrated by Brian Hurtt, and published by Oni Press. It's a paranormal/western action-adventure epic, spanning 50 mainstay issues and several spinoff miniseries. It's a tale of inevitable decimation, but more appropriately, it's a tale of letting things go. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, because this journey is well worth taking.

The art in this series is pretty good. It's not the greatest imo, but it's still nice. The art here always accentuates the feel of the moment, and in that, it does really well. The colorwork by Bill Crabtree is rock solid, and the lettering by Douglas E. Sherwood is tight. The action isn't amazing, but that's not really the focus in this series. The covers are very nice.

The plot is easily the star of the show here, and it's fantastic. Made even better by some stellar lore/back story, making it all come alive. Some stellar world building and an epic scale make it all come together as well. The story features many twists and heart-breaking moments, and you're favorite character is almost certainly going to get axed if you do read this. In some very horrible, yet very well-executed way. And towards the end, the last ten or so issues make for some very harsh, desperate atmosphere.

While the characters aren't nearly as beloved to me as anyone from Chew, they are all still very interesting, likeable, and memorable. Almost all of them are downright bastards, and there really is no good guy in this one. They're either compost or the guy with the shovel, there really is no in-between. Which, I don't know about you, but I think that is really cool, and fits the world that's built flawlessly. The dialogue and narration are great, and always add to the experience. There's also some neat dark humor thrown in, which is very befitting.

Its initial concept is very interesting, and that potential is only fleshed out even further. The theme is a cool clash, and leads to some very spectacular moments. The overall story arc of the series is highly unpredictable, which absolutely builds up the suspense of everything. The pacing is excellent and it never feels like it drags its feet or moves too quickly. This porridge, you could say, is just right. The finale brings everything together, and is, all by itself, absolutely epic.

The Sixth Gun really is an excellent series, which is to be expected from Cullen Bunn. You can tell there's a lot of heart in this art, as well as a lot of thought. I, as I already mentioned before, haven't yet read the spinoff miniseries yet, but I do intend to, just they'll be separate reviews (though I may bundle them together into one post or something). Anyways, this series is fantastic and well worth checking out. The Sixth Gun gets a 9/10.

Excellent

Summary:
The Sixth Gun is a no-nonsense epic. With an interesting theme, strong concept, stellar and page-turning plot, fantastic lore, strong world-building, interesting characters, tense stakes, great dialogue and narration, on-point pacing, good art, and nice covers. The action isn't spectacular, but that doesn't hold the series back much at all. He artily recommended.
