SOLDIER ZERO review
(Reviewed by Melody Werner)
Soldier Zero is a series co-published by BOOM! Studios and Pow! Entertainment using a character created by none other than the late Stan, the Man, Lee. Written by Paul Cornell then dynamic duo Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning, and illustrated by Javier Pina, it follows the same "human gets alien suit of armor" trope as Darkhawk, Blue Beetle III, TechJacket, Armor-I, and so on. It's not incredible, but it's still pretty good regardless.
The art is great. It portrays cosmic stuff very well. Fire and energy blasts look great too. Faces look pretty good, generally. The action is alright. It's not very violent, bloody, but there's tons of attention to detail where applicable, like bits of shrapnel going everywhere. The coloring by Sergio Ariño is quite good.
The plot doesn't feel very finished, and while the climax is pretty good in its own right, it doesn't feel very, to put it simply, fulfilling. It's great to leave stuff off and let readers determine how the story goes, but there were too many plot threads left untied and seemingly big players earlier in the series that just never got a very big role, which is just questionable, to put it lightly. However, the dialogue is pretty good, and hints of humor make Soldier Zero fairly enjoyable and entertaining to read. The characters vary well enough and are rather likable, but some are paper-thin and have zero point in the story.
Soldier Zero is a rather good read, but it lacks fulfillment and isn't amazing enough to truly be a must read or must have. It's good, don't get me wrong, and I'm glad I gave it a go, but I can't lie and say it's something you need on your shelves. Soldier Zero gets a 7.5/10.
Good
Summary:
A good series with great art, humor, likeable characters, and solid entertainment all around. However, the lack of satisfaction, some paperthin characters, and a half-baked plot keep it from being transcendental.
