GOLDEN SON review

(Reviewed by Melody Werner)
Golden Son is a 2015 sci-fi epic novel written by Pierce Brown. The second installment of a trilogy (though a new trilogy in this series is set to begin in January of next year (at time of writing)), it was met with critical acclaim. It follows a mining slave on Mars who, after being betrayed by the elites in society, injects himself into the aristocrat's race in a bid to gain power and begin a rebellion. Now, I got this almost immediately after I finished Red Rising. And just about immediately after finishing this book, I picked up the next one in the series, Morning Star. Good god, this series is so goddamn good.

The narrative is extremely compelling, spontaneous, and brutal. It's hard to predict future plot points as it shunts many expected story moments. The saddest moments are also absolutely merciless. At first, Golden Son feels like a bit of a step down from Red Rising, but a few chapters in, once it picks up, it absolutely becomes Red Rising's equal. The prose may seem dense and flowery if you're just getting into this series, but it helps build this world the story is set in, is very well written and vivid, and works extremely well. The characters are extraordinarily intriguing with their own arcs, motivations, secrets, and faults. The dialogue and narration are interesting and fit the characters. The action in this is written in such a brutal fashion. The ending is a complete and total paradigm shift for the series, it certainly forced my mouth to drop after reading.

Is it safe to say that I love this series yet? Golden Son gets a 10/10 from me.

Masterpiece

Summary:
If you liked Red Rising, Golden Son continues that story masterfully, changing the formula and keeping you at the edge of your seat from start  to finish.
