KIRBY: SQUEAK SQUAD review
(Reviewed by Tommy Stuart)
Okay, I just finished Kirby: Squeak Squad... and I feel I must talk about it. Developed by HAL Laboratory & Flagship, and published by Nintendo for the DS in 2006. I got interested in this game mostly due to the key chains in Triple Deluxe showing unique abilities and such from the game. I wanted to try the Kirby abilities. Before this game, I had emulated Kirby & the Amazing Mirror for similar reasons. I'm just going to say now that I preferred that game over this one. This one seems heavily based on that game, which is why I felt the need to bring that one up. Moving on.
So, the real big issue than anyone who has played this game (and people who pay attention to Kirby memes) should agree on: The plot is crap. Literally, it starts with a cake being stolen and ends with a dark force being beaten, so clearly there must have been some tangent somewhere. Honestly, the true end shows Kirby getting his cake back, but after all those events, I have to ask why the cake should even matter. Couldn't they just have shown Kirby seeing the Squeaks stealing stuff and wanting to stop them? Why did a random cake need to be thrown into the mix...? The plot also seems a bit similar to Adventure, with Meta Knight trying to stop Kirby instead of King Dedede. I will say that plot is never really an strong point to Kirby. I personally think that some have a pretty good plot, but it's still nothing extraordinary I suppose. However, in this one, I think the game would have been better if there was no plot. The plot seems to be so absurd that it just seems to be a negative to the game.
The graphics are mostly the same as Amazing Mirror. There are some new features that weren't in that game, like a bubble system on the touch screen and searching for treasure (using some new abilities). However, most of Squeak Squad seems heavily based on Amazing Mirror. The graphics, the enemies, and the music seem pretty much ported for the majority. Obviously the whole situation with the Squeak Squad changes things up. I just don't know if that's enough for me. To me, this game seems like a rush job. I don't know if it actually is or not.
Collecting the treasure is nice, but really, the game just seems boring. I wish the abilities were more OP, honestly. The real fun of Kirby is just destroying enemies easily and the game being a breeze. I just couldn't get that with this game. I took long breaks from it because I couldn't stand it. It still has some fun, but personally, it mostly seems like a waste to me. Just get Super Star Ultra if anything out of the DS games.
I give this gave a 5/10. I'm probably being a little generous with that review. Unfortunately, this game has bad plot, seems boringly easy, and seems highly derivative of Amazing Mirror.
Harmless
