LOVE: THE TIGER review

(Reviewed by Melody Werner)
Love: The Tiger was originally a French original graphic novel published by Ankama Editions in 2011, but in 2015 it was brought over for a wider release by Magnetic Press. Written by Frédéric Brrémaud and illustrated by Federico Bertolucci. It follows a hungry tiger as it tries finding food throughout a single day. It's the first in a series, which is titled "Love" because, to paraphrase, "in nature, love and hate don't exactly exist the way humans know them". It was met with critical acclaim upon release, and since there have been at least two more OGN's in the series which have made the jump out of France. What's especially intriguing about this book is its complete lack of words, with everything being told visually. This is something which is pretty uncommon in the comics industry, but pretty interesting nevertheless. As such, my review will be shorter than usual. I won't bullshit to fill an arbitrary word limit, this isn't a high school essay :p. I rented this from my local library today and read it in about half an hour (it's a short read), and I think it's a great book.

The artwork is gorgeous, with vibrant jungle landscapes, ferocious animals, and some creatures who are more cute, like a tapir. It's simple but evocative, you always know how the animals are feeling just from their expressions, which is essential for a book doing what it's doing. The physical print of it is very nice indeed. The sequential flow is smooth. It's a pretty compelling book which can be brutal at times. It also has some snail lovin', if that's something you might be keen on. It's not super graphic, if you're a prune--I mean snail sex isn't exactly gasp-worthy. Sometimes it can be humorous in how it portrays nature, like when it has two peacocks courting. The Tiger also has educational merit, showing younger readers how a day in the life might be in the animal kingdom. No hakuna matata's, just purely animals being animals, which may or may not be appealing to you. Sometimes the story doesn't exactly flow brilliantly, when it diverges from the main tale to show minor excursions like the aforementioned snails and peacock fuckery, but they're enjoyable enough and add to the story without feeling like filler.

Love: The Tiger is a strong OGN which works really quite well. It does what it does, and what it does is really damn cool and intriguing. If you want a natural take on nature, this is up your alley. Pretty entertaining and would be enlightening for those who haven't read up on these things. I'll definitely check out other books in the Love series, if I come across them. Love: The Tiger gets an 8.5/10.

Great

Summary:
Stellar art and a compelling and educational take on jungle which doesn't overdo things or outstay its welcome. The minimalism works and is refreshing, if you've been reading a lot of wordy comics. Very nice.
