INDIGO review - Cute to kill
(Reviewed by Melody Werner)
Indigo is a 2019 single by Indonesian R&B artist/rapper, NIKI. Released by 88rising to build anticipation for Head in the Clouds II (which comes out October 11th). I heard of this through--you wouldn't have guessed if you've read my other music reviews--theneedledrop, during one of his weekly track roundups. He sold the song to me, and I've been obsessively listening to it over the past few weeks. I already recommended it in this list of underrated songs, but I only spent one sentence actually talking about the song itself. Which is unacceptable for something this fucking good.
Now, I'm not exactly a pop guy, if the Meliora, Planet B, and Remember Me reviews didn't give it away. But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy poppy music--I love harder music, but if it's good music, it's good music. Indigo quickly won me over with NIKI's angelic voice, which is not only sexy as fuck (let no one ever say I'm not a hedonist, lol), but gels perfectly with the cute lyrics. NIKI has an incredible flow, which strings together her excellent singing with her equally fantastic rapping skills. The beat on this is pretty great too, and NIKI places herself on it incredibly. Honestly, NIKI just slaughters this song. Like, Jesus fuck. Why did no one stop her? I know it's not illegal to kill a song, but here? This song? It should be.
Indigo absolutely is not some underground song. I didn't include it in that list I linked at the start because no one is listening to this--I included it because this is a phenomenal song that is way better than the vast majority of what tends to get radio play or become culturally omnipresent. And I think this song deserves that status. I mean--I can't get tired of this song. It's too adorable. Too adorable. Apparently the music video for this is even worse, which means I'm gonna stay away from that because I already am over the moon enough with Indigo. Consider me to be on board for whatever NIKI does next. If it's as infectious as this, I may wind up listening to nothing but her music... which wouldn't be the worst thing ever. Indigo gets a 5/5 from moi.
Fantastic
Summary:
Goddamn, no one song should be allowed to be this cute, this sexy, this fun. Hell yeah.
