Webcomic Rundown #2 - HOOKY, SUBSIX, STRAWBERRY SEAFOAM

(By Melody Werner)

3 WEBCOMICS

3 EPISODES

3 MINIATURE FIRST IMPRESSIONS

__

Hey, everyone, so a new segment here that I'm bringing over from Comic Versus. Albeit this one's been heavily revised and streamlined.

Basically, I'll pick three comics on Line Webtoon. They all have three "episodes" respectively to gain my interest. I will then report my findings to you and let you know if I would continue reading them (full thoughts to come in full reviews, if I do follow through with a series that was initially spotlit here). I'll also be dropping three recommendations for webcomics I've already decided I enjoy and would recommend. So, without further ado...

IMMA PLAY HOOKY ON THIS ONE

#1 HOOKY by Míriam Bonastre Tur ✋
This is such a disappointment. Beautiful artwork held back by clunky, barely localized translations and lackluster lettering. This one clearly needed more time in the oven, though it may have improved enough by the latest updates to feel worth sticking with. Not the worst thing I've ever read, but it does make me glad that this format gives me license to ditch it cuz I have no interest in waiting for things to improve.

I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH FOR A WITTY INTERLUDE WITH THIS ONE, I'M SORRY!

#2 SUBSIX by erindrawsstuff 👍
I pulled the trigger on this one real quick. It doesn't even have three parts out yet. But what's been released is pretty fun. The art doesn't always have the best coloring, but I enjoy the facial expressions. Solid dialogue, likeable characters. Not a fan of the lettering.

WONDER & WHIMSEA

#3 STRAWBERRY SEAFOAM by Bryan Golden ✋
It's fine. It's okay. Colorful, relatively nice art hindered by a lack of cohesion and a feeling that it is maybe too glossy. Cool setting (Harry Potter by way of Little Mermaid), but nothing interesting is done with it thus far. The protagonist is as dull as dishwater, but at least Rouge is kinda cool. Has potential, but didn't draw me in enough to win me over.
