RENEGADES review - Synthphony of the Night
(Reviewed by Melody Werner)
Renegades is a 2016 synthpop album by the Missouri-based brothers, Chris and Anthony Greninger, operating under the Wolf and Raven moniker. Their tunes are inspired by a shared love of music and nostalgia for the SNES era of video games. Their music since 2014 has been released under their own label, though outlets such as NewRetroWave have carried their songs for a wider audience. I was first introduced to them around the same time as I got into Meteor's Para||el Lives and Volkor X's This Means War, and if I recall correctly, that was via NRW's sharing of "On the Run." Renegades is a top-notch album, perfect for a zen mood.
Where other synth musicians/groups sell feelings of hyper, energetic fun, Wolf and Raven is all about content, serene vibes. There are rocking moments, yeah, but the overall tone of proceedings is far more lightweight and bubbly than your Volkor X's, Hollywood Burns's, or Irving Force's. Which isn't a putdown, mind you; I like mixing softer and harder music. If it's good, it's good. Wolf and Raven also do a fantastic job of making an album which flows nicely and is enjoyable to listen to from front to back.
Renegades is the sort of project that will fly under most people's radars but I would still recommend to just about anyone, unless they're completely averse to softer kinds of music altogether (which is understandable). This is an album that I can't find fault with, and one I continue coming back to regularly. So I think a 10/10 is fair.
Masterful
Summary:
A shimmering, fun synthpop album that is an absolute joy to listen to.
