BOYS review - Oh boy
(Reviewed by Melody Werner)
Boys is a 2018 single by hip hop/funk/rap artist Lizzo (Melissa Jefferson). Released by Atlantic Records as a single initially, it was later added to deluxe versions of the 2019 album Cuz I Love You. I first heard of Lizzo after she posted a pro-Bernie Sanders tweet (which has since been deleted) and saw that other Berners on Twitter were talking about her. I decided to start with Boys after seeing that theneedledrop had listed it as one of his favorite singles of 2018--and I think it's fantastic too.
One of the first things to pop out to me was just how great the beat and accompanying instrumentals are. It's a beat that allows Lizzo to show what I like the most about her musical skills, that being her impeccable flow. But another important tool in her cachet is easily her bombastic personality, which is part of why just about every song she makes is a ton of fun. The humorous, clever, and inclusive lyrics (which Lizzo co-wrote, among others) further help to make Boys a ball worth listening to. And I almost forgot, but you can't discount her voice either. She's a natural at this stuff.
Boys is a terrific song for a festive mood. It's groovy and immensely enjoyable, and a great first impression if you're wanting to dive into the rest of Lizzo's discography. Definitely check this out if it sounds like it'd be your speed. Boys gets a 5/5.
Fantastic
Summary:
Lizzo proves just how much of a riot she can be with this forward-thinking and humorous song.
