THE MESSAGE review - Grandska
(Reviewed by Melody Werner)
The Message is a 2019 rock song by Johnny Manchild and the Poor Bastards, an Oklahoman alt rock band inspired by funk, jazz, blues, and ska. JM&tPB have been around for a few years (they were formed in 2016), and have released two albums and a number of singles. The Message is one such single of theirs, and was my entry point into the band, who I found out about through their inclusion in a video of theneedledrop's/Anthony Fantano's (who, if you haven't noticed, is basically where I get like half of my music recommendations from). I was intrigued enough to check them out personally, and I fucking adore what these folks are doing.
While the band has its fair share of more energetic and somber tracks, The Message has a great tune which strikes a nice balance and is a fantastic earworm. This is thanks to a great performance by Manchild (even if some may be put off by his voice), as well as phenomenally groovy instrumentation from the Poor Bastards. The lyrics are also a high point in this song, which is the same case for all the others I've listened to from this group thus far. They're varied, yet easy to remember--and hum to. The Message is a great introduction to the band, as it shows off their unique sound and is just so easy to vibe with. Also, Shelby Criswell (who seems to do all of the band's artwork) made such a great cover for this track.
If you want to get into a fun underground band, I very highly recommend you try JM&tPB. It's not the hardest rock you can listen to, but I dig other kinds of rock beyond the heavy shite and this might be up your alley even if you don't really love rock as a genre to begin with. Definitely expect more reviews of their music to come. The Message gets a 5/5 from me.
Fantastic
Summary:
A funky rock single that more people ought to be listening to.
