Comic Hot Takes - ONCE & FUTURE, MOUNTAINHEAD, & more

(By Melody Werner)
Howdy all, here's another new segment here that I'm bringing over from Comic Versus. Basically the same format as Webcomic Rundown.

GO ON, KING

#1 ONCE & FUTURE (BOOM!) by Kieron Gillen, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, & Ed Dukeshire 👍
While its publisher could go kick rocks, O&F is just about everything I had hoped it would be. A rollicking, anti-fascist adventure with Gillen's trademark wit and Mora + Bonvillain's mastery combined. The themes on display are a touch questionable, but I would rather go on about that in the Speaking Easy segment at some point.

THE ONE LETTER OFF OF BEING A PIECE OF SHIT REALLY MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

#2 MOUNTAINHEAD (IDW) by John Lees, Ryan Lee, Doug Garbark, & Shawn Lee 👍
Mountainhead is a delightful surprise. A bang-on thriller with taut pacing and a glacial atmosphere. Fantastic art which elevates the writing perfectly. Consider me down for wherever this goes next.

SHITES TEMPORAL

#3 KNIGHTS TEMPORAL (AfterShock) by Cullen Bunn, Fran Galán, & Dave Sharpe 👎
I'm typically an easy mark for a Cullen Bunn comic, and AfterShock always has my attention when they have something new as they're one of the few decent alternative publishers who doesn't fuck over trans people or cheat people out of pay (*cough, cough* Dark Horse, BOOM!, Action Lab, Vault, Chapterhouse, Titan-1, etc., you STUPID fucknuggets). Knights Temporal seemed cool, but I cannot make heads or tail of it. The art is inconsistent, flitting between inspired and undercooked, while the story is an enigma. And not in a good way. Not in a trippy, psychedelic, cerebral way. Just in a disjointed and ill-conceived one. And lol at that typo in #2. There's potential, but it is unfulfilled thus far.

LEAVE IT TO REAVER

#4 REAVER (Skybound/Image) by Justin Jordan, Rebekah Isaacs, Alex Guimaràes, & Clayton Cowles 👍
Justin Jordan is a writer I find very hit and miss. Sometimes he's one of my favorite writers period, other times he kicks ass, other times I leave underwhelmed. This is very much Jordan in the kickass territory I enjoyed seeing him in with books like Backways and Sombra. This time, we see him with an underrated talent as his primary collaborator, Rebekah Isaacs, and they work together marvelously. This is a really fun read, even if everyone in it is obviously a terrible person cuz it's low fantasy. Intrigued to see where things go.

THIS ONE LEFT ME PARCHED

#5 TOMMY GUN WIZARDS (Dark Horse) by Christian Ward, Sami Kivelä, Dee Cunniffe, & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
The idea of TGW is definitely better than the actual book is. Kivelä, Ward, and Cunniffe do a spectacular job with the art and Hass continues to prove himself as one of this generation's best letterers, but I cannot care any less for this story. Where the art excites, the writing is bland with its also-ran set of characters and lame narrative.
