KISS THE GO-GOAT review - Give the Devil his due
(Reviewed by Melody Werner)
Kiss the Go-Goat is a track that comes from the 2019 pop rock EP, Seven Inches of Satanic Panic. It's Ghost's follow-up to their 2018 album, Prequelle, providing another hit of Ghost's distinct flavor of doom metal--though this EP is more psychedelic 60's style pop rock. And yet, it is discernibly Ghost. No, not just because it's fantastic either.
While Ghost has shown a more poppy, fun side before on tracks such as Absolution and He Is, they have always kept to similar lyrical topics which keep a song like this recognizably "Ghost," while remaining not quite like nothing else in their catalog. And the lyricism on display in KtG-G is nothing short of excellent. See, the whole theme is that this is a 60's style song that is actually Satanic. And not, y'know, just some hedonistic fun. Which KtG-G winds up being plenty of in the process. Even more so when you consider the humorous set-up of the song. But what really sells the track to me is its groovy instrumentals that so perfectly emulate the verve of 60's rock while keeping to a sound that is unique to this band and this band alone. Kiss the Go-Goat isn't my favorite Ghost song, but it is extremely enjoyable and if I may... hypnotic. I can't get enough of it. Perhaps that was Satan's intent when he possessed Ghost and had them make this track. If so, consider me won over to Satanism. Kiss the Go-Goat gets a 5/5. Fantastic Summary: Ghost continues to show their range with what is bound to be one of the best songs of the year.
