RATS review - A high rat-ing
(Reviewed by Melody Werner)
Rats is the lead single for Swedish band (their music is in English, FYI) Ghost's 2018 album, Prequelle. Like Meliora before it, Prequelle was released by Loma Vista. Rats was a bit of a radio sensation upon release, and still gets played on hard rock stations like Octane to this day (that's actually where I'd first listened to it). Ghost caught people's eyes with their performing gimmick of all band members having been anonymous and playing characters under costumes and makeup, but kept people's attentions with their unique sound and incredible music. And this song? This song shreds, y'all.
Much like the other best Ghost songs, Rats dives hard into an odd mix of sounds, with the creepy elements of doom metal but also the accessibility of pop rock. This makes for a strange but purely awesome combination which never fails to have me tapping my feet to it or generally vibing with its fantastic flows. Tobias Forge's vocals are yet again up to the task of being on par with the instrumentals--that are yet again a highlight, though I think Forge comes through on top just a little bit in this song, with the refrain of "Rats, rats, rats" being when the song hits its highest mark imo. And, like in Meliora, Forge's ominous lyrics really elevate the song.
Rats is one helluva cracking, eery tune. And while I think Prequelle overall is a bit of a minor disappointment following on the heels of Meliora, Rats is a Ghost track for the ages. Rats gets a 5/5.
Fantastic
