OH... SIR!!: THE INSULT SIMULATOR review
(Reviewed by Melody Werner)
Oh... Sir!!: The Insult Simulator developed by Vile Monarch and published by Good Shepherd Entertainment. Available on both PC and mobile, though I will be reviewing it based on the Android version. It's an arcade-y game where you string together insults based on a random set of phrases and you try to whittle your opponent's health down to zero before they do. And you know what? It's pretty fun.
Oh... Sir!!'s art style will be divisive to some. It is a pixel art caricature ish aesthetic, though I personally dug it for being very much one of a kind. It's consistent, it's polished, though I think more could've been done with the character animations. The music suits well, but it isn't the kind of soundtrack I keep humming long after or am ever listening to outside of game--as with The Sexy Brutale's or Skeleton Boomerang's.
Oh... Sir!! is a game of various game modes, but all of them are essentially the same and only vary in length. I think it would've been nice to have modes which are themed or shift the paradigm, but that'd just be gravy. There are various characters, but only a few like Lo Wang from Shadow Warrior and Serious Sam really stand out a lot. Gameplay has a slightly tactical vibe, where you have to plan ahead somewhat on what phrases to pick that'll damage your foe most. If you make a sentence fragment like "Your mother was an English pig dog and" without picking up one of the elusive "(...)" phrases, your sentence will do 0 damage. So you do have to take these things into account, you can't just throw anything together and win.
So the game is much reliant on the average quality of the insults you're able to construct. And they are usually decent enough to keep you interested long enough to play the game for a few weeks every now and then, before it starts getting pretty stale. There are some sparks of brilliance where you're able to spit out some pretty ridiculous or biting putdowns, but these are not always rewarded in game by dealing more damage.
On the whole, Oh... Sir!! is a good time that doesn't really have the infinite replay value you'd hope for. It has things going on under the hood. And it doesn't have any garbage cloying for the rest of your wallet as some games I will be getting to shortly do. Oh... Sir!!: The Insult Simulator gets an 8/10.
Solid
Summary:
Generally fun gameplay, charismatic pixel artwork, and it's good for a laugh now and then.
