DIESEL: IGNITION review

(Reviewed by Melody Werner)
Diesel: Ignition is a 2015 comic series by Tyson Hesse. Published by BOOM! Studios under its kid-friendly Boom! Box imprint, it is an all-ages fantasy adventure featuring a young heir to a respected sky captain's legacy. Despite people seeming to love it and Tyson seeming to view it as his magnum opus or great passion project, it sits at 4 issues which tell a satisfying and fairly self-contained enough story that still begs for a continuation. A continuation I'd love to see.

Hesse's artwork is rip-roaring and extraordinary. The characters are expressive, affable, and adorable in their designs, with a few especially neat ones. The big set piece action sequences, especially the climax's, are magnificently rendered, but the quieter moments are equally stunning in their own ways. Just as stellar are the environments, which are absolutely impeccable. The perspectives and panel layouts are dynamic, while remaining easy to read and comprehend without getting too bogged down in moments of "What what?" Hesse captures a great scope full of whimsy in his visuals, which no doubt elevates the adventurous thrills. The lettering is tight and easy to grasp, though may not have the graceful flair one might see of say, Aditya Bidikar.

An animation expert at heart, it is perhaps expected Hesse be a phenomenal solo illustrator; but what may throw some people off their rocker is just how well written his work is as well. The plot is something we've seen before, but it is executed with a conviction and craft that makes it difficult to take umbrage with. The pacing is exhilarating, leaving no time for locales to get stale when they are so briskly shuffled out. This is a book that definitely reads well as a TPB, though I cannot attest to how well it works episodically.

Diesel: Ignition is a wonderful read perfect for readers of all ages. It's cute, adventurous, enjoyable, and leaves off with plenty of room for follow-ups that I'd love to see. Unfortunately (or fortunately if you're him or are into Sonic), Hesse has since been making himself busy in animation, working on the fantastic Sonic: Mania animated shorts. So we may not see the world of Diesel return very soon, but I think it's worth checking out regardless if this sounds like it's your speed. Diesel: Ignition gets a 9/10.

Awesome

Summary:
One of those all-ages books that stands as an exemplar in the field. Gorgeous visuals and writing almost as good, if you've got younger family members or are maybe looking for something lighter between all of the grey you should have this on your radar.
